Plans for Soho to be pedestrianised this summer are currently in the works.
Pedestrianised Soho 2025
Once restrictions from the global pandemic eased in 2020, the capital launched the Soho Summer Street Festival to get people back into the much-loved pubs, bars and restaurants in the central London district.
Many of the streets were closed to traffic, enabling hospitality venues to spill their seating out onto the roads. This occurred again in 2021, where people could dine alfresco with a pint in hand.
Rumour has it that pedestrianised pilot is making a comeback this year, but these plans are yet to be confirmed. An open letter by the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) has been written to Borough leaders, with the support of Deputy Mayors Dawber and Simons. The letter says:
"London’s hospitality, leisure and tourism industries have faced significant challenges with rising operating costs and the ongoing cost of living crisis that is affecting consumers. Yet London’s pubs, clubs, theatres, restaurants, hotels, and cultural venues are not only critical to our economy—they’re the lifeblood of our communities and a key reason people choose to live, work, and invest here"
They continue: "We encourage you all to do what you can to support popular and exciting ideas like al-fresco dining and late-night openings during this spring and summer period to boost our economy and tourism offer in our capital this year ahead of the pilot coming in.”
It is hoped that pedestrianised drinking and dining will make a comeback this summer. Keep an eye on this page for the latest updates.
